Dental Hygiene Care

Regular dental hygiene care plays a crucial role in maintaining good dental health and overall wellness. It’s important to prioritize regular checkups and cleanings with your dentist and hygienist, as over 60% of Canadians suffer from periodontal disease which is linked to serious health conditions such as heart disease, autoimmune disorders, and stroke.

Complete Oral Examination

A Complete Oral Exam, routine check up, also known as a clinical exam, is a standard dental procedure that evaluates the overall health of your teeth and mouth, and identifies any potential issues. During the exam, your dentist will first visually check your face and neck for any lumps, bumps or swelling. Next, your dentist will examine the soft tissue inside your mouth, such as your lips, gums, tongue, palate and cheeks, for any discolorations, ulcers or signs of oral cancer. Your dentist will also assess your bite and jaw joint for any problems. Additionally, your gums and jawbone, which provide the foundation for your teeth, will be checked for signs of gingivitis, gum disease or bone disease. Finally, your teeth will be checked for cavities and other issues, with special attention given to areas where you may have symptoms or concerns. It’s essential to have regular check-ups to ensure the long-term health of your teeth and gums.

X-Rays

A clinical exam alone is often inadequate to fully diagnose potential issues with your oral health as many problems with your teeth and jawbone cannot be seen with the naked eye. X-rays are essential in providing a more precise view of what is happening inside your mouth and below your teeth and gums. They allow your dentist to identify any bone loss and assess the severity of gum disease. These initial x-rays not only reveal previously unseen issues but also serve as a reference point for comparison during future visits.
